Mazda Releases 1st-Gen MX-5 Miata Reproduction Parts For North Amerixa

Breathing new life into an old-timer is a very time- and money-consuming experience, so Mazda has come to ease the restoration process of the Mk1 MX-5 Miata in the United States with a dedicated program.

Looking to keep as many original roadsters as possible on the road, the Japanese automaker collaborated with specialty shops and Miata clubs to figure out what parts they mostly need for their projects. Thus, with the help of suppliers, they started making the components in Japan, using modern manufacturing techniques and materials, while retaining the original look and feel.

“Our unique Jinba-Ittai – ‘horse and rider as one’ – engineering philosophy has allowed for the engaging and exhilarating driving dynamic that has remained constant over the years, helping make the Miata an important vehicle for the brand and our fans”, said Mazda North America’s Chairman and CEO, Masahiro Moro. “By helping prolong the life of MX-5 Miata NA models, Mazda is committed to supporting the roadster culture and looks forward to seeing these historic vehicles on the road – and on the track – for years to come.”

Those with a classic Miata in their garages should thus take a look here for the full list of available parts. Mind you, it’s a 42-page document that includes virtually anything, from those rare oily bits to suspension, brakes, exterior body panels, fabric soft tops and all sorts of buttons and knobs. Designed to look like the original sets, the wheels are being reproduced by Enkei, and are now lighter and more durable.

Part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car ever, this is actually an expansion of the program, which launched in Japan a couple of years ago.

Mazda should release the new RX-7…

    • Mr. EP9

That’s not happening as Mazda has no intentions on making one.

      • Giziclown

Mazda is going to be 100 years old next year, that’s why we need to say thank you to Rob Dahm for building a proper RX-7.

  • Six_Tymes

Just rebuild and re-sell this generation and watch it “sell like hot cakes” as it did the first time around. DO THAT Mazda, re-release a complete brand new first gen as a limited offer. People would go nuts for them, as would I.

    • Julien Lachemoi

It’s a dream. I read this countless times: release this old car as new and it will sell like crazy.
No it won’t. When you spend ten of thousands of dollars for a car you want to have something worth your money and that means having the latest tech, safety and features.
If they sold a new NA, it would attract about a hundred people worldwide so it would be a waste of money for Mazda.
Why spend 20-30k$ for a car you can buy in good shape at 6K$ ?

  • Avtomad

Great they are doing this, there’s nothing worse than seeing a Miata/MX-5 pimped up

  • db

    Was that spelling gaffe intentional?

  • Nastinupe1911

Not sure if their value would be worth the cost of restoration. This was a sub $20k car brand new. It’s not like it’s a Porsche 911 or Ferrari or something. It’s like restoring an Integra.

    • The Terminator

Yes much cheaper & much more fun than a Porsche or Ferrari based on my experiences. Owned a 1997 Integra GSR as a daily for 17 years. Awesome car. I have now switched brands & gone MX-5 Miata Club which beats those super cars in a number of ways. Restoration of a NA would be totally worth the cost & still undercutting the cost of a Porsche / Ferrari by thousands or hundreds of thousands !!!! Obviously a non Miata owner posting about about the virtues of spending BIG $$$ while getting little more enjoyment from driving !

      • Nastinupe1911

Actually, why spend the time and money restoring an NA when you can get an ND for probably less money and less effort? Again, other than just wanting to spend money and work on something, I don’t see the point in the project? NA’s aren’t rare so if you want one in better condition, just buy one. Why spend all of that money and time doing it? Heck I can get a nice ND for $20k now. There’s no way I’m going to throw all of that effort into an NA to get nothing out of it. At least restore something that’s going to increase in value, like a muscle car or a rare german car or something.

  • That Guy

Meanwhile I cannot get an update for my 1 year old smartphone

    • The Terminator

The Miata is not made for smart phone updates. I wish they would employ a feature that disables smart phone use if anybody is detected in THE DRIVERS SEAT !!!! Only audio apps would be available on your phone … that is IT !!!! As far as the NA parts being available its awesome. Anybody who has actually driven a Miata its all about driving NOT TEXTING / OR SURFING THE WEB while driving. My ND Club has to be my favorite car EVER. 1st Miata / 1st convertible & loving the hell out of this car. THAT GUY please don’t ever get in front of me … EVER !!!!

  • Puddingpopper

  • The Terminator

Its a classic car that is not fully appreciated by the industry. Only those that have owned a Miata know the pure joy these driver cars offer. The automotive magazines have praised the Miata for what the car does to a drivers senses. But the cars have not appreciated in value only in the eyes of enthusiasts seeking a car that gives the satisfaction of hitting the apex on back roads while riding the throttle & moving thru the gears. Quite the ANTI – MUSCLE CAR. Which BTW a Hellcat was 10 seconds SLOWER around Willow Springs race course. Just the facts . Also it is THE MOST RACED CAR IN THE WORLD ! Not the Porsche / not the Ferrari / not the Corvette … it is THE MIATA !
