Polestar has launched a new design competition which asks fans to create something that “stretches the boundaries of imagination” and looks 20 years into the future.

The contest is currently underway and it leaves a lot up to artists. However, there are a few basic ground rules as the company says ideas shouldn’t reach into the “realm of fantasy.”

The theme of this year’s competition is “Pure” and Polestar says designers can create a car or something else entirely.

There will be both student and professional categories, and initial designs can be submitted in the form of sketches or digital images. Following this initial stage, Polestar Design will create a shortlist of competitors which includes ten students and ten professionals.

The shortlisted competitors will receive individual feedback from Polestar Design as well as a one-on-one coaching session with Polestar designer Juan Pablo Bernal. Their designs will then be turned into digital models.

From there, the field will be narrowed down to five students and five professionals. They’ll receive further digital modeling support to “help attain a consistent level of quality.” The resulting designs will then be displayed on social media as well as at the Polestar Design Exhibition.

Lastly comes winner selection as one student and one professional will take top honors. They’ll get a “1/5 scale hard model” of their design as well as a trip to the Polestar Design Exhibition.

The contest is open to nearly everyone over the age of 18 and designs will be selected on three main criteria. These include how successfully the design meets the brief, how well it shows an exciting future direction for Polestar, and the level of “technical quality” present in the design itself.
