The McLaren 765LT has proven itself to be the quickest-acceleration production vehicle on the planet, but the owner of a heavily-modified Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 in the United States thought he could outdo the British supercar.

As standard, the Shelby GT500 rocks a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 churning out 760 hp, making it one of the most powerful cars currently on sale. However, such a remarkable figure clearly wasn’t enough for this owner as they have made a number of modifications to it, including the fitment of an upgraded supercharger. The car also rocks a new exhaust system and runs on race gas, allowing it to deliver 1,110 hp through the rear wheels.

To put that figure into perspective, the McLaren 765LT owned by Brooks from the DragTimes channel on YouTube is completely stock. In theory that should mean its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 delivers 755 hp at the crank, but dyno tests suggest it actually produces more than 850 hp. Either way, it is at a disadvantage to the Ford.

The duo lined up for no less than five races and throughout all of them, they remained neck-and-neck. In one of the races, the McLaren beats the Ford by just 0.01 seconds, although across the five races, the Ford was consistently quicker, recording quarter-mile times in the 9.3 and 9.4-second range. However, once a tuned 765LT with a custom exhaust was brought to the drag strip for one final race, it beat the GT500.
