McLaren has a history of understating the horsepower and torque figures of its models and it appears it has done the same with the all-conquering 765LT.

Powering the 765LT is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, and while this engine is the same basic unit used by the 720S, McLaren did make some modifications and claims it is churning out 755 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque at the crank. As it turns out, the 765LT actually produces those figures at the wheels.

Not long after storming down the quarter-mile in a record 9.33 seconds with the McLaren 765LT, Brooks from the DragTimes channel on YouTube strapped the supercar to a dyno in South Florida. On the first run, it mustered up 765 hp and 596 lb-ft (808 Nm) of torque through the rear wheels.

In a subsequent run, the McLaren topped out at 769 hp and 596 lb-ft (808 Nm). A third run was then performed, albeit this time in sixth gear, with the car recording numbers of 757 hp and 607 lb-ft (822 Nm).

To put these figures into perspective, the same dyno shop has previously tested a McLaren 720S at 660 hp and 542 lb-ft (734 Nm) of torque at the wheels, meaning the 765LT actually has upwards of 110 hp more than the 720S, not 45 as McLaren claims. Factor in a 13 per cent drivetrain loss (which the host says comes from the video of a different dyno run) and the 765LT’s engine may actually be pumping out as much as 885 hp.
