Mazda Australia has expanded the BT-50 range with the introduction of a new diesel engine, while also launching some new trim levels.

The new Mazda BT-50 was co-developed with Isuzu and is now offered with a 1.9-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing 147 hp (110 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. This engine is presumably the same one that Isuzu has been selling for a number of years now and in the BT-50, is available exclusively in the XS trim level.

Coupled to the new engine of the BT-50 XS is a six-speed automatic transmission and the truck is capable of towing up to three tonnes. Mazda has also equipped the XS with steel wheels but other than that, it is offered with identical features to the BT-50 XT with its 3.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel.

Elsewhere in the range, Mazda Australia has launched the BT-50 SP. This model sits at the top of the range but just below the Thunder and is adorned with a host of contrasting brake and grey parts, including a black grille, black wing mirrors, 18-inch satin black wheels, dark grey side steps, Driftwood leather and black synthetic suede interior trim, black tonneau cover, a tub liner, and a gloss black sport bar. The SP is sold exclusively with the flagship 3.0-liter engine.

“As we move towards the brand-new BT-50’s second year, we are already focused on evolving the product and offering wider customer choice, which is a hallmark of our business,” Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi said in a statement. “The new Mazda BT-50 SP model brings a strong, sporty aesthetic with impressive equipment levels, while the new 1.9-litre turbo-diesel drivetrain delivers a highly capable entry point into the BT-50 model range.”
