Mercedes just launched the performance flagship of their electric limousine, the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+, which steers and drives all four wheels and produces up to 751 hp when fitted with the optional Dynamic Plus package.

The fastest EQS has a dual motor setup with AMG-specific electric motors producing a combined 649 hp (484 kW / 658 PS) and 950 Nm (701 lb-ft) of torque. While this is impressive enough, the Dynamic Plus package brings it to up to 751 hp (560 kW / 761 PS) and 1020 Nm – but only when the Race Start mode is selected.

This allows for a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, which is faster than the 3.8 seconds of the standard version. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) with the Dynamic Plus package, up from the 220 km/h (137 mph) in standard form.

Energy is stored in a 400-volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 107.8 kWh and AMG-specific wiring. According to Mercedes, the WLTP range is between 526-580 km (327-360 miles), which is less than the 770 km (479 miles) of the non-AMG variant, but still not bad for a performance-focused EV that weighs 2,655 kg (5,853 pounds).

The performance limousine comes standard with rear-axle steering of up to 9 degrees, which not only makes it more agile but also reduces its turning circle. The standard AMG RIDE CONTROL+ adaptive air suspension with a four‑link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear has AMG-specific components for better handling.

Naturally, stopping power is upgraded with the AMG high-performance compound braking system comprising of 415 mm discs with six-piston calipers at the front and 378 mm discs with single-piston calipers at the back. Buyers can also choose the optional AMG ceramic brakes with larger 440 mm discs at the front. In both cases, the i-Booster system makes the best out of the energy recuperation and the hydraulic brakes.

The guys in Affalterbach were anxious that their first fully electric model would be too silent, so they added the AMG Sound Experience. This configurable system emits noise through loudspeakers both inside the cabin and outside the car. The driver can choose between different modes – Balanced, Sport, Powerful, and the optional Performance included in the AMG Dynamic Plus package – independently of the selected driving mode.

Design-wise, the AMG variant of the EQS is wearing the same front and rear bumpers as the sporty-looking AMG Line. However, it can be distinguished by the vertical chrome elements on the covered grille, the larger rear spoiler, and the 21- or 22-inch AMG alloy wheels in Aero or Heritage design.

The electric limo can be further customized by options like the AMG Night Package Dark Chrome, AMG carbon trim elements, or red brake calipers. Despite the design changes, the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 is still quite aerodynamic with a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd, which is worse than the 0.20 Cd of the regular version.

Inside, the signature Hyperscreen dashboard comes as standard, with the MBUX infotainment featuring AMG-specific screens and functions like the optional AMG Track Pace telemetry system. Sporty touches in the cabin include the AMG seats upholstered in Artico man-made leather (Nappa leather is optional), the flat-bottom AMG steering wheel dressed in Nappa leather, the aluminum paddles, the red topstitching, the sports pedals, and the AMG-branded floor mats and door sills.

Pricing for the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ will be announced closer to the market launch. The performance limousine from Affalterbach will land in U.S. dealerships in early 2022.
