Almost 150,000 Chevrolet Express Cutaway and GMC Savana Cutaway models are being recalled across the United States.
General Motors has revealed that subject vehicles come equipped with an unused circuit that a final-stage manufacturer may elect to use to install an optional rear HVAC system. If a final-stage manufacturer is to leave the circuit’s connectors or cut wires unsealed, their exposure to moisture or contamination could trigger corrosion. Additionally, it could result in high current draw through the circuit at the vehicle’s lower left side B-pillar.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall notice notes that the unintended release of excessive heat from the circuit could trigger a fire and increase the risk of injury.

The car manufacturer began to investigate the issue on December 6, 2022 after a pair of fires involving 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Express Cutaway vehicles. GM broadened its investigation to include 2005-2023 Chevrolet Express Cutaway and GMC Savana Cutaway vehicles in January this year and identified eight related complaints, six of which had alleged fires. It was quickly concluded that the unsealed rear HVAC blower motor circuit could corrode over time.
A total of 138,588 Chevrolet Express Cutaway vehicles are involved in the recall, all of which were manufactured between August 12, 2002 and March 27, 2023. In addition, some 10,440 GMC Savana Cutaway models are being recalled and were built from May 8, 2002 to March 23, 2023.
Dealers were notified of the recall on April 6 while owners will be informed around May 22. GM dealerships will then ensure that the rear HVAC blower motor circuit at the left side B-pillar will be properly sealed to prevent moisture exposure.
