RJ Scaringe is taking over another big role in addition to being CEO of EV automaker Rivian. Starting today, he’s now responsible for all product functions which carries a lot of decision-making responsibility. The previous position holder will remain with the company in an advisory role through 2024.

Becoming the head of product functions means that Scaringe is now responsible for software, autonomy, design, propulsion, vehicle, electrical, and programs departments at Rivian according to a filing with the SEC. The same document outlines that the previous role holder, Nick Kalayjian is moving into a new position as the Vice President of Vehicle Engineering & Propulsion. He’ll continue to report to Scaringe.

Scaringe sent an email to employees about the change and mentioned that Kalayjian will focus on the next-gen Rivian platform in the meantime. “You have heard me repeatedly state in our company updates, it is critical that quality plays a central role across our business – this not only drives how our brand is perceived but it is a major enabler for our continued ramp,” Scaringe wrote in his email.

Kalayjian appears to have made this shift somewhat intentionally and with the blessing of Scaringe. “With this, the time has come for me to make a change. Over the last few months, I’ve taken time to Zoom Out and have been talking with RJ to understand how my involvement could continue to allow me to have an impact while letting me step back from my existing role.

My desire to make changes aligns perfectly with RJ’s desire to redirect more of his time and energy toward Product leadership. I have never met anyone in my life or career who is a better mix of engineer and visionary product leader than RJ. I know that him spending more time working with our Product teams will create significant value for all of us and our shareholders,” said Kalayjian in a separate email according to TechCrunch
