• Lego Speed Champions is launching a special BMW E30 M3.
  • The car will sport a special M Motorsport-inspired race livery.
  • Lego and retailers will start selling the model on August 1.

Forty years after the original E30 BMW M3 turned a touring car homologation special into a permanent fixture of the enthusiast canon, the celebration is taking a smaller form. BMW’s classic performance model is getting the Lego treatment, and the result will land in the Speed Champions range later this year.

Designers from Lego recently paid a visit to BMW’s headquarters in Germany, working with a team of designers from the automaker and working on the best recreation of the E30 M3 possible. The model will form part of the Lego Speed Champions range, which already includes the BMW M4 GT3 and BMW M Hybrid V8 LMDh prototype.

According to Will Thorogood, head of design at New Business within the Lego Group, his team has aimed to replicate many of the E30 M3’s most important details in brick form. For example, Lego will use two tiny forks to replicate the car’s kidney grills.

Several teaser images hint at what the model will look like, but they are only mock-ups, and the final design may be a little different. In addition to Lego working out the best way to recreate the E30 in brick form, it has also worked with BMW designers to create a special livery for the model.

Launching On August 1

Previewed on a life-size E30 M3, the livery combines elements of black, red, blue, and white and includes large ‘40’ stickers on the doors. The car also sits on a set of gold wheels, which may also be added to the model.

“The livery visually embraces the layered block form construction inherent to LEGO, while also referencing BMW M Motorsport race liveries of the past and present with a bold diagonal schematic traversing the entirety of the car,” BMW M head of design, Michael Scully, noted. “Adding to the high contrast layout, the large number 40 emblazoned on the hood celebrates a significant anniversary of the M3 production car in a graphic language which again draws inspiration from LEGO’s geometric aesthetic.”

The Speed Champions E30 M3 goes on sale August 1 through Lego directly and via the usual third-party retailers. Pricing lands at $29.99 in the US and €27.99 in Europe.
