As the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (or IIHS) crashes cars in a deeply scientific manner to rate their safety credentials, it needs to record all of it on video for later analysis and conclusion-drawing.

Special high-speed cameras that record the crashes at very high frame rates are needed in order to accurately see each crumple zone… crumpling, each airbag deploying and each dummy’s head missing it in the small overlap test.

The official video posted below goes into detail about the camera equipment used, how it works and why it’s needed. It’s part of a series called “Inside IIHS,” which focuses explain what the Institute does and how it goes about doing it.

It’s especially insightful if you’re into cameras and already know a thing or two about them. You’ll notice they use different types of cameras for varying applications, each with its own precise set purpose and plus points.
