The loss of soul and character is an issue that not only plagues regular road cars, but also vehicles of with more pronounced off-road inclinations. For instance, RegularCarReviews says there is nothing quite like the 1986 Toyota 4Runner, the first generation of the model.

They say it’s been diluted and watered down in its latest (fourth) incarnation – it may do basically the same thing, but it’s nowhere near as enjoyable to own, drive or modify for off-road use.

The 4Runner tested in the video posted below is far from stock, but it supports the point that it’s an excellent platform for bolting bits. For instance, it doesn’t even have the original fully-independent suspension setup, as it has been completely stripped off and replaced with solid axles and leaf springs.

If you were looking for that special project vehicle to kick start your interest in off-road trails (and Moab), this could be the model for you.
