The will soon get a significant increase in its range, following improvements to the lithium-ion battery pack.

Compared to the industry's best-selling electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf 107-mile range, the i3's falls about 27 miles short.

To rectify this, Automotive News reports that a 50 per cent improvement should bring the 2017 MY i3 close to the 120 mile mark.

Even so, the latest Chevrolet Bolt, which costs just $30,000 after federal tax credits, can take you up to 80 miles further on a single charge.

Of course, the compact Bimmer belongs to a different segment, being a premium product costing $20,000 more before tax credits. And it's available with a range extender, too, that makes it much more attractive for those who wish to leave city borders without suffering from "range anxiety".
