Bentley has confirmed it is working on a fastback variant of the Bentayga, the world’s fastest and most expensive SUV.

While speaking with Automotive News recently, Bentley chief executive Wolfgang Durheimer confirmed that the sportier Bentayga will be launched to rival the likes of the Lamborghini Urus and Maserati Levante.

“We anticipate most of them [other premium SUVs] will come to market in two to three years — 2018, 2019. When they arrive, I want to have an answer,” Durheimer confirmed.

Rather than simply receiving a redesigned and sleeker tailgate, the executive said that the entire exterior design of the fastback Bentayga could be tweaked to resemble last year’s EXP 10 Speed 6 concept. That could mean a slimmer front grille would be featured alongside new air intakes and potentially, redesigned headlights and taillights.

While the fastback Bentayga program has yet to receive approval for production, Durheimer said that design and engineering work on the car is already at an advanced stage.

According to company officials, a final decision on the fastback Bentayga will come by the end of 2016.
