The Mustang is on a mission to conquer the planet and the first signs tell that it’s doing a mighty fine job.

According to IHS Automotive, the Ford Mustang was the top-selling sports coupe worldwide in 2015, and the only one to pass the 100,000 mark in sales.

Ford actually sold 110,000 Coupes and 30,000 Convertibles in the previous year, with the Mustang now being available for purchase in 140 countries, including Australia where the model was practically sold out through 2017 before our mates down under received an extra allotment of cars.

What’s more impressive though is that the record was achieved despite the limited availability for most of the previous year in markets like China and the UK.

“U.S. consumers have enjoyed interesting foreign sports cars for decades, so it was time for the Americans to return the favor with the worldwide launch of the new Mustang,” says Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst. “Global markets have responded in a huge way. Ford Mustang was the only sports coupe in the world with more than 100,000 units registered last year.”

More than 16,600 customers have already ordered a Mustang in Europe, with 4,700 of them delivered. The iconic Ford topped the charts in Germany and France last month with UK customers already buying 3,500 cars.

Customers in China prefer the EcoBoost versions over the V8 with Australia, New Zealand, Germany and the United Kingdom opting for the range-topping 5.0-litre version of the Mustang.

As for the US, Ford sold 12,563 Mustangs in March, outperforming sales of the new Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger combined, with the same happening in Canada.
