Could The New BMW 1-Series Sedan Be Rear-Wheel Drive?

BMW just took the wraps off the new, China-only 1-Series Sedan and it is already causing a commotion.

There was only one picture in the press release and no info concerning the technical aspects of the vehicle, so we have no way of knowing specifics.

Rumors say the 1-Series Sedan rides on BMW’s modular “lower class” (or UKL2) platform – the same one that underpins the 2 Series Active and Gran Tourer, the latest X1 and the Mini Clubman. That makes it front-wheel-drive, something that is gradually being introduced in the brand’s line-up.

What if it rides on current 1-Series’ platform instead? According to Car Throttle, a BMW UK spokesperson confirmed that the new model is underpinned by a cut-down version of the existing 1-series hatchback’s platform and said that it’s likely to receive a range of four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines.

Until proven otherwise, we’re looking at the automotive equivalent of Schrodinger’s cat, albeit in this case it’s a matter of RWD and FWD instead of dead or alive.
