Jaguar Land Rover is said to have initiated talks with both Ford and BMW about building a battery factory for future electric cars.

As Tesla ramps up with its plans to open the world’s largest lithium-ion battery factory and to produce all of its vehicle’s batteries in-house, the British, American and German firms are apparently considering doing the same.

Ford currently sources its batteries used in the Focus Electric from LG while BMW receives its batteries from Samsung. While Jaguar Land Rover doesn’t currently offer an electric vehicle, building its own batteries with two other huge automakers would help it slash manufacturing costs and speed up the process of bringing its first electric model to the market.

While it has yet to be confirmed by JLR, the company is believed to be in the midst of developing an all-electric model based around the F-Pace crossover, potentially dubbed the I-Pace. As neither Ford or BMW are reportedly working on electric crossovers/SUVs at the moment, they’d be no need to worry about the firms building cars to rival each other.
