Volkswagen has revealed that it is actively developing an all-new seven-seat SUV based around its existing Amarok pickup.

The German firm is already planning a slew of new SUV models, including a long-wheelbase variant of the Tiguan and a next-gen Touareg, and with its Amarok-based model, hopes to take the fight to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

In creating the new model, VW will use the recently facelifted Amarok as its base. That means that alongside featuring the same architecture, it will come standard with a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6, identical to that of the refreshed Amarok. This powertrain is currently offered in 161 hp, 201 hp and 221 hp states of tune so the same can be expected for the new SUV.

While the model is unlikely to debut for a few years, the director of Volkswagen Group’s commercial vehicles Carlos Santos told Motoring development is quite progressed.

“There is some very serious development happening at the moment for an SUV based on Amarok, which will be quite a large passenger vehicle. It’s not confirmed yet but it’s been going on since the start of Amarok,” Santos said.
