The new Tiguan comes with more power than a regular Golf GTI, thanks to its BiTDI power unit that boasts 240 PS (237 hp); Volkswagen, however, might want to squeeze even more oomph out of the compact crossover.

Another Tiguan has been spiedon the Nurburgring and, judging by the way it sounds, crackles and torments its tires, what we’re looking at is more likely than not a new performance variant. According to the video description, the model is an R-branded Tiguan, even though a recent report from Car Advice suggested such a model was allegedly deemed unsuitable.

Either way, there isn’t a Tiguan on the market (with or without the R-line package) that rocks quad exhausts and crackles on downshifting, but an R variant isn’t that farfetched, especially as the model already comes with the Golf R’s fifth-gen Haldex 4 Motion four-wheel-drive system. All it’s missing is the 2.0-litre turbocharged EA888 TSI petrol engine that produces 300 PS (296 hp) and… there you have it.

Further details about the car are unknown at this point, but the Geneva Motor Show seems like a good candidate for the launch. Regarding its performance, it outperform the 2.0-litre 240 PS (237 hp) diesel that needs 6.5 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint and tops out at 228 km/h (142 mph.
