Tesla Introduces Powerwall 2 With Double The Battery Capacity

Tesla has introduced its long-awaited Powerwall 2 for households and Powerpack 2 for businesses.

The updated Powerwall includes two 14 kWh lithium-ion batteries, more than doubling the capacity of the first-generation pack and the company says it is capable of powering a four bedroom house for an entire day with lights, refrigerator and other appliances. Powerpack 2 meanwhile has a 210 kWh capacity and can be scaled up indefinitely by combining multiple Powerpacks.

Additionally, a power inverter has been incorporated into the Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2 whereas the originals had a separate piece of hardware. The new ones are also able to work alongside Tesla's recently-introduced solar roof tiles.

Compared to the original Powerwall, the second-generation one also adopts a different design, ditching the curvy design in favour of an angular look and with a flatter design. Each unit will be priced at $5,500. During a Q&A at the Powerwall's introduction, Elon Musk said he anticipates the firm to sell more Powerwalls than cars.
