The new Compass revealed at the LA Auto Show last week may be on the smaller end of the Jeep spectrum, but it’s not about to skimp on what the brand stands for.

Slotting in above the Sport, Latitude, and Limited models in the 2017 Compass is the top-of-the-line Trailhawk model – a designation Jeep only applies to its most off-road-capable, trail-rated models.

Trailhawk versions are currently available on the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Renegade – the latter being the only model smaller than the new Compass in the Jeep lineup.

The outgoing Compass and Patriot – both of which are replaced by the new Compass – did not offer Trailhawk versions, while the Wrangler comes in Wrangler Rubicon trim. The Compass and Patriot were among the least off-road capable models that Jeep made, with the shallowest approach angles, lowest water-fording capabilities, and lowest crawl ratios in the lineup.

With no more than 19 inches, the new Compass can’t ford a stream any deeper than the old one, but offers better approach, departure and breakover angles than the models it replaces. Only the more on-road-oriented, crossover-like Cherokee is less capable off of solid pavement, and the brand faithful will surely enjoy seeing that model replaced with a more rough-and-tumble model as well.
