Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s Australian division has said that it is evaluating a business case for right-hand drive versions of the Dodge Challenger and Charger.

Given Australia’s love for rear-wheel drive performance cars and the runaway success that has been the new Ford Mustang, it’s little wonder why a right-hand drive conversion is being considered.

While speaking with Car Advice, FCA Australia boss Steven Zanlunghi said “We’ve had the discussion on it and we have said we are looking at the business case because we know what Mustang does in Australia. I heard it was a six month wait, but you guys told me it’s an 18 month wait. Then again globally they have just taken down their production.

“We are constantly looking for the opportunities in the marketplace and that’s one of them. Especially when there’s the Falcon and Commodore going, so if we can make a business case out of it then we can see those vehicles here in Australia,” Zanlunghi said.

Initially, FCA is thought to have investigated the possibility of having an Australian company perform the conversions. However, costs were too high so instead, discussions are being held about bringing the next-generation Challenger and Charger to Australia as they’ll be based around a more global architecture.
