Part of Honda’s commitment to have two thirds of its global sales covered by vehicles with an electric powertrain by 2030, the new Clarity FCV has now arrived in Europe.

On sale in Japan since March this year, the fuel cell-powered Honda is taking baby steps across the Atlantic, with the first six vehicles arriving in customer hands in London, UK, and Copenhagen, Denmark, as part of the Hydrogen for
Innovative Vehicles (HyFIVE) demonstration project, partly funded by the
Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCHJU).

Aiming to promote the awareness and adoption of fuel cell vehicle technology, the program will eventually see the arrival of 185 fuel cell cars, from five automakers, which will be deployed to private and corporate customers across the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Austria, and Italy.

Honda has always been one of the leaders in the field of hydrogen fuel cell technology, with over 30 years of research and development behind us. The arrival of these vehicles in Europe and Honda’s participation in HyFIVE is the next step towards Honda’s vision of the full commercialization of this technology“, said the brand’s Chief Project Engineer and leader of the Clarity Fuel Cell program in Europe, Thomas Brachmann.

The Honda Clarity uses a fuel cell and integrated powertrain, which is almost the same size as a V6, fitted under the hood. With a full tank of hydrogen, it was estimated by the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to be able to drive for 366 miles (589 km).
