With their Steed ute costing just $29,990 AUD in 4×4 diesel spec, Great Wall Motors is looking to nab their own slice of the Aussie compact pickup market.

That’s something Car Advice tried to find out during their time with the Steed, a car that doesn’t feel as cheap as previous GWM models despite the attractive price tag.

In fact, if you opt to get a 4×2 petrol Steed, you could pay as little as $24,990 AUD, for which you get a 2.4-liter petrol unit with 134 HP (136 PS) and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque, 16″ alloys, a cargo bed liner, stainless steel sports bar and day time running lights.

The flagship 4×4 diesel version, like the one tested here, features a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine, good for 147 HP (149 PS) and 310 Nm (228 lb-ft) of torque. It also comes with Intelligent 4WD, a BorgWarner transfer case and side steps.

In comparison, the rivaling Nissan Navara costs upwards of $30,181 AUD, and that’s if you’re settling for the 4×2 Dual Cab entry-level version.
