Audi E-Tron Electric SUV Driven; Should You Cancel That Model X Or I-Pace?

The Audi E-Tron is the first production battery-powered SUV from Ingolstadt.

It has nothing in common with other E-Tron-branded vehicles, except for the name, and it’s a new arrival to this niche.

Powering it are two electric motors, one on each axle, which get their juice by a 95 kWh battery. In Sport mode, 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint takes 5.7 seconds, which is very respectable for a car that weighs 2.5 tons (5,512 lbs).

Keep the right pedal down, and it will eventually top out at 200 km/h (124 mph). And it does all of this with a range of over 400 km (249 miles) in the WLTP driving cycle.

Adaptive air suspension, LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels and a charging point on each side are all standard. However, those techy side cameras that replace the traditional mirrors are an optional extra.

The ride is okay, the steering is nicely weighted, there’s room for up to five occupants and it has more boot space than the Tesla Model X but less than the Jaguar I-Pace with the rear seats up.

So, what does the electric SUV feel like first-hand? AutoTrader traveled to Abu Dhabi for the international media launch of the Audi E-Tron, and their review is only a mouse click away.

    This thing is ugly. I am curious to know why some automakers deliberately or not deliberate building an electric vehicle worthy of buying, although the regulations are force feeding consumers to purchase an electric vehicle at the demands of the automaker trying to submit a better fuel economical vehicle and I like a gasoline powered vehicle as of which I am use to.

      Looks fine to me. It fits with the rest of the Audi lineup. Only “ugly” part would be the grille and Audi hasn’t had an attractive grille in a very long time. The rest is handsome.

        Galvanize, No two of us are alike with 33 individual veterbraes and 640 muscles in the human body, so we will have disagreements because to me, the Audi E-Tron is absolutely hideous.

          Sure there are reasons. They do have radiators if they’re sufficiently advanced for drive and battery temp control and heat exchangers if they have a/c. Of course, the required grille area for these things is a lot lest than for ICE cooling.

          Then there’s just aesthetics.

          Finally there’s the effort to make the car more relatable (and therefore *sell-able*) to a world accustomed to seeing grilles on cars, particularly the cars of a given brand.

          Yes, it’s much easier to design an EV without a grille. Yes, it’s much easier to optimize an EV’s aerodynamics by designing it without a grille. Yes, going without a such a grille makes the design more unique and futuristic in a world where grilles are common and expected.

          Long story short, grilles are fine when done right aesthetically and aerodynamically.

      I don’t usually like Audis but this one looks quite great. Much better than the Tesla and you can see how the interior quality is just miles better than any electric rival. As for the electric technology…I am sure Tesla wins.

        No. I like some Audi crossovers, but this thing is ugly.

    Very misleading. The Tesla has seven seats, and this only has a maximum of five. With all the seats up, the Audi has more rear cargo space. But with the 6&7th seats folded, the X has more cargo room than the eTron while having the same number of seats. With all of the passenger seats folded, the X has more than 30 cu ft more cargo space (88.1 in the X vs 57 in the Audi)

    So with a nearly identical size battery (100kwhr in the X vs 95kwhr in the Audi) the Audi is much much slower, has significantly shorter range, has fewer seats, a nonexistent charging network, no autopilot and less cargo space. The Audi doesn’t even match the specs of the X with the smaller 75kwhr battery pack. Sounds like a winner to me!

    The Tesla Model X has no waiting list and has been characterized as the most unreliable car on the planet. Tesla is also an amatuer automaker, now falling behind in all areas of EV technology and their proprietary Supercharger network is fast becoming a “one in every 150 miles” joke.

        I’ve been a passenger in a new Model X and the the interior rattled like a twenty-year old Volkswagen. When will you Musk fans actually accept that there is a fundamental build quality problem at the company? You clearly choose to ignore the owner’s forums where people are discussing the issues.

    It doesn’t look better than Tesla or Jaguar but I would go with the E-tron to play it safe. I have 2 friends that got Teslas …one of them the car didn’t start after 3 months …he had to take it to Austria for checks & interior quality is not that great. Jaguar …if they are as good as the Range Rovers ..no thank you..in the end is going to be between the E-tron and Mercedes ECQ.

    Until the Taycan is released, this is my favorite EV. It,looks miles better than the Model X and I-Pace, and the build quality will actually be good.
