Reaction to the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has been mixed, but at least one outspoken critic has praised the electric crossover.

In a tweet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told the company “Congratulations on the Mach E!” Musk went on to say electric vehicles are the future and he’s excited about the Mach-E because it will “encourage other carmakers to go electric too.”

Ford was understandably happy about this and replied “Thanks, Elon. We couldn’t agree more. See you at the charging station!”

The praise is interesting for a number of reasons as the Mach-E will go head-to-head with the Model Y. The two vehicles also share a similar design, and this has led some people to say Ford stole from the Tesla playbook. However, it appears Musk isn’t too concerned.

This could be because the Model Y actually under cuts the Mach-E when you compare similar specifications. The entry-model Model Y starts at $48,000, has 300 miles of range and can run from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.5 seconds.

To get a similar Mach-E, customers will need to purchase the Premium variant which starts at $50,600. They’ll then have to opt for the optional 98.8 kWh battery pack that enables the model to have a range of approximately 300 miles (483 km). Despite the price premium, the Mustang Mach-E Premium will be slower than the Model Y as it will only be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in the mid six second range.

While customers will have the final say over which vehicle is more desirable, it’s nice to see automakers playing nice for once.
