The panel of 86 international automotive journalists has further trimmed down the 2020 World Car of the Year list by announcing the top three finalists in each of the five distinct categories.

The battle for the World Car of the Year title will see two Mazdas, the 3 and CX-30, plus the Kia Telluride, measure themselves against each other before one of them will claim the award.

Vehicles that didn’t make it to the final round in this category include the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Soul EV, Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz’s CLA and GLB, and Volkswagen’s Golf and T-Cross. In the world urban car class, we find another Kia, the Soul EV, facing the electric Mini Cooper SE and Volkswagen T-Cross.

In the World Luxury Car category, the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Porsche Taycan electric vehicles will face the mighty Porsche 911. Additionally, the Mazda3, Porsche Taycan and recent 2020 European Car of the Year winner, the Peugeot 208, have made it to the final of the World Car Design of the Year.

Porsche has already bagged the World Performance Car award, as this category only includes vehicles from the German brand: the Taycan, 911 and 718 Spyder / Cayman GT4 duo. Previous entries in this category included the Toyota Supra and BMW M8.

The road to the 2020 World Car Awards will end on April 8, when the winners will be announced during a ceremony that will open the New York Auto Show, hopefully.
