While the chief designer over at Tesla, Franz von Holzhausen, said the company is aiming for a $30,000 (€21,900) base price for the upcoming all-electric BMW 3-Series rival (possibly called Model E), it doesn’t seem feasible for them to sell such a car two years from now.

It won’t be the first new model they’ll be releasing, but it will follow the Model X crossover, which is slated to go into production in late 2015.

Von Holzhausen explained to Autocar that the new smaller sedan would adopt a more daring styling and design policy and that it would end up looking far more distinctive than the Model S. The aim is to give it personality and add more substance behind the name – it will probably therefor be more flamboyant than the speculative rendering below.

However, while the styling and pricing are currently far from final, what’s certain is that it will use the same platform that debuted with the Model S and which will also underpin the Model X, albeit in a shorter form and (hopefully) with a smaller higher performance battery pack.
