As part of the wider 5,000,000 strong recall with potentially defective airbag inflators made by Takata, General Motors has issued a recall concerning about 200,000 Saab and Saturn vehicles.

Apparently the recall will extend to 180,000 cars in the United States and another 20,000 in Canada according to the car maker.

The models in question are SAAB 9-3, manufactured between 2003 and 2011, 2010 – 2011 model year SAAB 9-5, and Saturn Astras from 2008 to 2009, as these vehicles are believed to have the infamous Takata PSDI-5 front driver-side airbag units.

Fortunately, no casualties were registered on account of the airbags in the afformentioned automobiles, but elsewhere, at least 10 deaths were linked to Takata-made airbags; 10 of them in Honda models and a recent one in a 2006 Ford Ranger.

According to Automotive News, last week the three largest German automakers, Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW each recalled 850,000 vehicles with the same problem.

This action comes in the wake of the extensive recall which involved more than 23 million Takata airbag inflators in more than 19 million vehicles.
