On paper, the BMW M2 seems nothing more than a cheap and less powerful variant of the M4. In reality however, the M2 has proven itself as entirely distinct from its more expensive siblings and capable of producing thrills unachievable by other M models..

While recently coming into driving the baby M2 models, Clarkson insisted that the model would be nothing more than a cheap alternative to the M4 absent of any of the advanced suspension components or a very special turbocharged 3.0-liter flat six-cylinder engine. When in the drivers seat however, the former Top Hear host discovered that the new car just so happens to be most impressive M model he’s ever driven.

Power for the BMW M2 comes courtesy of a turbo’d six-cylinder pumping out 365 hp. While that is 60 hp less than the provided by the M4, the M2’s reduced size and weight means it doesn’t need to match the M4 for power and its utilization of an electromechanical differential means it can powerslide like the finest American muscle cars or be as composed and drama-free as an entry-level racing car.

The journalist said in his review that before driving the M2, his favorite BMW to wear the fabled M badge was the original 286 hp M5 beating out the likes of the E92-generation M3 and the current M6 Gran Coupe. But now for less than 50,000 pounds, the outspoken presenter believes there’s a new king of the M badge and it just so happens to be the cheapest.
