U.S. company Genovation Cars has set a new top speed record for an all-electric road car after taking its custom C6 Corvette Z06 to a 205.6 mph (330.8 km/h) top speed at the Kennedy Space Station.

The firm’s modified Z06 ditches the car’s naturally-aspirated 7.0-liter, 505 hp V8 engine in favor of an electric setup consisting of a 44 kWh battery and two electric motors. This setup results in the equivalent of 600 hp and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque and actually makes the C6 Z06 faster than it was out of the factory.

Although it isn’t known just how much weight the batteries add to the car’s mass, it does retain the standard car’s 50-50 weight distribution meaning it should still have similar lively handling characteristics.

In February, Genovation’s Z06 ran at 186.6 mph (300 km/h) which itself was a record at the time and in just five months, almost 20 mph more was extracted from the car.

Given the lack of a transmission in all-electric cars, their top speeds have generally been off the pace of petrol-powered supercars. As the technology advances however, they are getting faster and faster. Croatia’s Rimac Concept_One promises a 220 mph (354 km/h) vmax but that has yet to be verified.
