We all had to stop and catch our breath when we saw footage of the very rare, very fast, and very expensive Koenigsegg One:1 crash at the Nürburgring.

But while the car may take some work to put back on the road (or track), we were encouraged to hear that the driver is alright.

In a statement released in the aftermath of the unfortunate incident, Koenigsegg confirmed that “the driver was taken to hospital as per standard procedures” but that he was, thankfully, “released the same afternoon.”

The statement also confirms that the crash took place during a factory-run test session, and not in private hands. The manufacturer was taking part in a second week-long Industry Pool session in as many months in order both to fine-tune the setup of its vehicles and to prepare for a future lap record attempt.

“A Koenigsegg is an extreme performance car and must be tested accordingly. This is an inherently dangerous undertaking,” the company stated. “This incident is confirmation of just how difficult it is to drive at this level on the world’s ultimate proving ground. Obviously we are dismayed with this development but pleased that our safety systems worked as designed to protect our driver.”

Valued at over $3 million, the One:1 could very well be the most expensive road car ever to crash on the famously challenging circuit in Germany. But with only seven made, chances are high that the manufacturer – and its insurers – will put in however much it takes to get it back not just in working condition, but tip-top shape.
