Is This E30 BMW M3 Really Worth More Than A Current M3?

The E30-generation BMW M3 is not only the first iteration of the world-famous sports car but it is also the most valuable and among certain revheads, the most desirable.

Just over $60,000 could get you a brand new M3 in the U.S. or it could perhaps get you one particularly fine E30 M3 being sold next month. If the upper pre-auction estimate is hit however, an extra $20,000 over the new car could be necessary.

This 1990 example has travelled 75,000 miles but thanks to its pristine white paint job, looks much more modern and appealing. When combined with the tightly-spoked wheels, small rear spoiler and the ever-appealing boxy two-door shape, it’s not surprising why the car is expected to sell for so much.

Power from the car comes courtesy of a naturally-aspirated 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 192 hp at 6,750 rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm. While that’s a far cry from the current 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six of the F80, the E30’s combination of a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission, rear wheel drive and limited slip differential make for what Automobile Magazine once called one of the greatest drivers cars ever.

Despite its age, the car’s interior looks to be in impeccable condition with the light tan leather seats and door panels perfectly offset by the black dashboard and steering wheel.

Due to the model’s collector status, it’s likely to continue to increase in value in the coming decades.
