Porsche Hints At Sub-7 Minute 911 GT2 RS Nurburgring Time

Porsche has hinted that the new 911 GT2 RS may achieve a sub-7 minute lap around the Nurburgring.

Launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the new GT2 RS is the most powerful 911 ever and has all the right ingredients to storm around Green Hell.

Speaking to Motoring at the launch of the car, the boss of Porsche Motorsport, Frank-Steffen Walliser, said that a lap time around the circuit has yet to be set but that if it is, its time could start with a six.

“This is the seventh generation of the 911. It’s all about sevens… It’s 700hp but it’s no seven at the Nurburgring,” he said. “Wait and see. Give us some time and we will check it.”

The fastest Porsche production car to ever lap the circuit is the Porsche 918 Spyder with a time of 6:57. Earlier this year, the facelifted 911 GT3 set a storming 7:12 lap, meaning Porsche has a nice 15-second gap to slot the GT2 RS into. It is possible however that it may actually top the 918’s time.

Commenting on whether the GT2 RS may beat the previous 6:52 record set by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, Walliser said that whatever time the GT2 RS does, it will be completely stock, suggesting that the Performante used wasn’t.

“I will say one more thing about [the Nurburgring lap-time]… We [will] use the tyres we sell to the customers. We [will] use the engine that the customer will have in his car. This is the Porsche approach. I’m not going for lap times that the customer cannot achieve. Full stop… No comparison to competitors, but that is how we do it,” he said.
