Nissan is set to replace Renault in the FIA Formula E Championship following discussions within the automotive partnership.

It is unclear why the alliance has decided to replace the Renault e.dams team with Nissan but the Japanese automaker is one of the world’s biggest producers of electric vehicles and currently lacking a significant presence in any leading worldwide motorsport series.

Motorsport believes that while the decision has already been made, an official announcement may not be made until the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018.

Last month, Renault e.dams unveiled its Formula E racer for the 2017/18 championship with a fresh new livery. It seems probable that the launch of the new racer means Renault will stick around for the upcoming championship before being replaced by Nissan for the 2018/19 season.

Recently speaking about the sport’s lack of a Japanese manufacturer, Formula E chief executive Alejandro Agag said that either Nissan, Toyota or Honda will end up in the series.
