If you want to save yourself a lot of hassle in choosing an old sports car to drive around, there’s nothing wrong with going Japanese. Like this fairly clean first-gen 1980 Mazda RX-7 GS we found on eBay, which is said to be both mechanically sound and good to look at, according to its owner who bought it from “a friend of the original owner.”

Nevertheless, as with any used car and especially one fitted with a rotary engine, it would be wise to have a mechanic check it out and eliminate any nasty and costly surprises.

Being the GS model, it gets the naturally-aspirated 12a rotary engine displacing around 1.1 liters.  However, it does get upgraded front suspension from the more powerful GSL variant, as well as its limited-slip rear diff and vented rotors for the rear brakes.

On the outside, the RX-7 sports its original color and a subtle body kit, as well as custom flared rear arches. On the inside, the owner has swapped the old seats the car came with for a pair of Recaro buckets.

The current bid is for $2,424, but it is far from meeting the reserve for what the owners claims to be “easily one of the best looking first generation RX-7s available” on the market.
