With only 106 to be made, you can pretty well guarantee that now two examples of the McLaren Speedtail will leave the factory in Woking exactly the same. McLaren Special Operations will see to that with what promises to be an extensive and exacting array of personalization options. And among those customization items it will offer for the hyper-GT will be – wait for it… special badges!

That’s right, one of the perks bestowed upon the multi-millionaires buying McLaren’s next Ultimate Series model will be special badges for the nose and tail. Like these right here, which are crafted from gold and carbon fiber.

Rather than make them in-house, the racing team turned supercar manufacturer outsourced these to Vaughtons. The Birmingham jeweler, established in 1819, channeled its expertise from crafting Olympic gold medals (and other such trophies) to create the McLaren badges out of 18-karat white gold with laser-etched logos and carbon-fiber inlay using McLaren’s proprietary thin-ply technology.

“As beautiful pieces of exquisitely hand-crafted jewellery, the white-gold badges perfectly set off a car that in every way represents a new gold standard for McLaren luxury,” said McLaren design director Rob Melville. “They fit perfectly with the philosophy of the Speedtail, the most luxurious car in McLaren Automotive’s portfolio, as well as paying homage to its forebear, the McLaren F1.”

The badges weigh all of 100 grams, but for those customers particularly conscious of added heft, there are practically weightless options using a lacquered transfer. There’ll also be solid platinum badges available, as well as the standard aluminum version with black inlay.
