Following a preview earlier this year, Jeep has released details about their 4xe Charging Network.

Unveiled as part of this year’s Easter Jeep Safari, the 4xe Charging Network was jointly developed with Electrify America and will include Jeep-branded charging stations at or near Jeep Badge of Honor off-road trails.

The first three charging stations are scheduled to open this spring and will be located in Moab, Utah, Big Bear, California and the Rubicon Trail in Pollock Pines, California. Additional charging stations are planned for later this year, but there’s no word on specifics. However, there are more 50 Jeep Badge of Honor trails located across the United States.

The network will consist of Level 2 chargers that are either solar powered or directly connected to the electrical grid. These types of chargers are relatively slow and Jeep noted it will take approximately two hours to fully recharge the Wrangler 4xe’s battery pack, which allows the model to travel 21 miles (33.8 km) on electricity alone.

On the bright side, charging will be free for Jeep 4xe owners. They’ll be able to initiate and monitor their charging session via a custom mobile app from Electrify America.

In a statement, Jeep CEO Christian Meunier said “Electrification opens a new chapter in the Jeep brand story, and it brings an entirely new level of excitement and enjoyment to our enthusiastic owners.” He added, “Key to making Jeep … the greenest SUV brand is assuring our owners can enjoy the benefits of electric propulsion wherever they go, including the most iconic off-road trails in the country.”
