Modern vehicles are incredibly complex machines and that’s before factoring in high-tech features such as semi-autonomous driving systems.

Much of this technology is front and center as automakers are increasingly adding larger and more advanced infotainment systems. However, we’re going to talk about digital instrument clusters and whether or not you prefer them over traditional analog setups.

I’m team digital as modern clusters offer a clean layout as well as extensive customization. Some displays also offer full map views with GPS navigation and this means you’re only looking at two things instead of three. This is immensely helpful when driving on congested city streets in an unfamiliar area.

Luxury vehicles are even more advanced as some of their digital instrument clusters can show a night vision display of the road ahead. Others incorporate augmented reality and this seems to be the wave of the future.

It’s also impossible to ignore how digital instrument clusters make vehicles feel more modern and advanced. Compare that to analog gauges, which come off feeling cheap and old school.

Despite that, analog gauges have their charms and the 2023 Nissan Z is a prime example of this. While the sports car now comes equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the gauge pods are a throwback to a simpler time.

Speaking of simpler times, instrument clusters didn’t use to be the center of attention. In particular, classic Jeeps feature a round speedometer which is placed by your knees, never to be looked at unless a cop is behind you. Times have certainly changed since then, but let us know which setup you prefer in the comments below.
