Owners of the 2021 Nissan Versa and 2021 Kicks in the United States will soon be hit with bad news as both models have been confirmed to be impacted by a recall.

Nissan says that select 2021 Kicks and Versa models may suffer from an intermittent electrical connection in the electric power steering (EPS) torque sensor that can disable the EPS assist. If this were to happen, a power steering warning light would illuminate in the instrument cluster and the power steering system would stop working. While the mechanical steering will still work, the issue still represents a significant safety concern.

The recall impacts 11,824 models. These consist of Nissan Versa models manufactured between July 19, 2021 and September 27, 2021 and Kicks built between the same dates at the firm’s facility in Aguascalientes in Mexico. A total of 2,820 Versa models are included while some 9,004 Kicks are involved.

Nissan will alert dealers to the recall from July 25 while owners will be alerted from September 8. Interestingly, this recall has been issued less than 12 months after 20,040 Versa and Kicks models in the U.S. were recalled due to the same power steering issue. At the time, Nissan thought it was recalling all affected vehicles but as it turns out, the 11,824 involved in this second recall can also suffer from the same issue.

Nissan says it received a notification from the steering column supplier in May this year that certain steering column torque sensor lot codes were not provided at the time of the recall issued last year. “Out of an abundance of caution,” Nissan will re-inspect all the vehicles that it had previously determined would not need a steering column replacement.

Dealers will fix the issue by inspecting the steering column torque sensor lot code and replacing the steering column assembly if necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge.
