The trend of small companies building tribute versions of European classics shows no sign of abating, and there’s a fresh name jumping into the game. You may not know Homologation Specials Reimagined, or HSR Manufaktur, but you may be very taken with what it is building.

This rather spectacular-looking machine is called the Type 859, and it has been conceived as a reborn Audi Sport Quattro SWB. The clever part is that HSR hasn’t had to cut up and modify any old Quattros. Instead, it built the car around an old Audi Coupe B2, much the way HWA is working with its Evo.
The design of the Type 859 is definitely something worth celebrating. It includes obvious nods to the original Sport Quattro but with a few modern refinements. Key highlights included the yellow-tinted, rally-inspired headlights, the aggressive front bumper and grilles, the boxy flared wheel arches, and the large fixed rear wing.
Carbon Galore
Every exterior panel is made of lightweight carbon fiber, and HSR insists that all air vents are functional. The front splitter, rear wing, and hood louvers are also active aero components, providing on-the-fly adjustments to boost downforce. The company says it’s targeting a weight of under 1,200 kg (2,645 lbs), although it’s unclear whether that was achieved.
While the tribute is based on an old Audi Coupe B2, the chassis has been shortened by 12.5 inches (320 mm), and a roll cage has been incorporated. Audi’s brilliant 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder from the current RS3 has been installed, offering up to 600 hp in the most extreme drive mode. Unlike an RS3, the engine is now mounted longitudinally, improving weight distribution.
Bolted to the five-cylinder is an upgraded six-speed manual from an S4, paired with a Torsen center differential and a mechanical LSD at the rear axle. The spec sheet also runs to active suspension with adjustable ride height, carbon ceramic brakes, rev matching, and launch control.
Total production of the Type 859 will be capped at just 84 units, each carrying a starting price of €500,000 ($570,000), excluding tax.
