• Just 50 examples of this special Mercedes-Maybach S680 are being built.
  • Mercedes may have to hold a lottery in Japan to allocate orders.
  • The car is finished in a combination of Obsidian Black and Olive green.

Mercedes-Benz loves a limited-edition model and has just confirmed that its latest will be coming to Japan, albeit limited to just five examples. Known as the Maybach S680 V12 Edition, it looks back at the history of the German luxury brand and was first presented for other markets in September last year.

Global production of the model is capped at just 50 units, and Japan will get 10 percent of them. It pays homage to the legendary Maybach Zeppelin, which was the first mass-produced Maybach model with a V12 engine. In the early 1930s, the 7.0-liter and 8.0-liter mills topped out at 200 PS, and this new one has more than triple the power.

In fact, thanks to the company’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12, it muscles out 603 hp and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. This engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system, resulting in an impressive 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of just 4.5 seconds. It’ll then power through to a 155 mph (250 km/h) top speed.

A Special Body

The paint scheme of the S680 V12 Edition is no doubt the most striking element. The lower portion of the body is finished in metallic Obsidian Black, while the upper part is bathed in Manufaktur Olive metallic, a deep yet reflective shade of green. Mercedes-Maybach has then added High-Tech Silver pinstripes.

Whereas it normally takes around five days to paint a regular Maybach model, this one takes up to 10 days to complete. Matching the paint are unique 20-inch Maybach forged wheels with the same Manufaktur Olive paint.

Ensuring the limited-run model stands out even further is a special Maybach badge with a 24-karat gold inlay and a V-shaped pattern inspired by the V12’s cylinder arrangement.

What Else is Special?

Plenty of custom touches have been made throughout the cabin, too. For example, the car is trimmed in a combination of Manufaktur Saddle Brown/Black and has Nappa leather on the headliner and steering wheel. The center console also has a special numbered ‘1 of 50’ plaque, and headrests sporting the special golden Maybach logo found on the outside.

In Japan, the car has been priced from 53.99 million yen ($342,400). If Mercedes receives more than five orders for the car, it will hold a lottery to determine who will have the lucky chance to buy one.
