If BMW is serious about electrification (and all indications are that it is), then the Bavarian brand will eventually have to expand its range from pure hybrids to plug-in hybrids (PHEV) on a larger scale involving core models like the 3-Series instead of only having the i8. This may happen sooner that you think, as BMW has been actively testing a 3-Series PHEV.

Just last week, we captured a prototype of the plug-in model wearing a thin disguise to cover the electric port on the front fender, but now, our spies nabbed a second tester that proudly sports its charging door.

The latest rumors suggest BMW may name this model the 320e or 320 eDrive, and that it could hit the market as early as 2015.

In regards to the powertrain, we believe it will carry the same or a similar plug-in hybrid system as the X5 eDrive Concept from last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, pairing a 2.0-liter inline-four turbocharged engine (petrol or diesel) to a potent electric motor.
