With a 300 PS 2-litre TSI engine, the Golf R is 0,2 seconds slower from 0 to 100 Km/h (62mph) than a Ferrari 360 Modena, but that’s obviously not enough for Volkswagen.

It’s no secret that the German car maker’s small family hatchback has a lot of potential, as it can be transformed into a full-fat “supercar” – some might say – with the R400 concept being the prime example.

Well, when asked whether the aforementioned “hot-hatch” will go into production in an interview with Drive, Dominik Hoberg didn’t negate the possibility:

“Let’s see. There might be a surprise coming. We have this year the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI. Be surprised in May or June. Let’s see what will happen.”

Hoberg wouldn’t elaborate further, just noted that “there will be something” and it will be fast”.

The Australian magazine goes on saying that the world-famous Worthesee meeting (backend up by Volkswagen) could provide an excellent opportunity for the car maker to unveil the ultimate-performance Golf, and that according to German media, a possible R400 production-spec Golf may ditch the four-banger in favor of Audi’s 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder mill.
