While one of these cars does technically win the drag race, the difference between the new BMW M2 and the Mercedes-AMG A45 would only count if you were in the middle of a qualifying session.

As far as real world performance goes, the A45 and the M2 are two very similar sports cars, even though one’s a hatchback and the other a small coupe. Other differences include engine size, traction and a bit of weight, but other than that, there isn’t much between them in a straight line, at least not on paper.

The 2016 Mercedes-AMG A45 is still the world’s most powerful hot hatchback. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine sends 381 PS (376hp) and 475 Nm (350 lb-ft) to all four wheels, while the BMW can only use its rear wheels in order to find grip. The M2 is otherwise good for 370 PS (365hp) and 465 Nm (342 lb-ft) of torque coming from its 3.0-liter 6-cylinder unit, while also weighing less than the Merc by approximately 35 kg (75 lbs).

With the Bimmer down on power, torque and traction, it seems the A45 should have everything it needs in order to cross the line first. But will it?
