While the current gen Civic Type R sets lap records at various European circuits, the upcoming one is thoroughly being tested at the Nurburgring.

This recent video caught the upcoming performance hatch doing what it does best; going around the 21 km-long circuit like there’s no tomorrow. As with the current Type R, this one too is being developed around the technical bends of the Green Hell, in Honda’s pursuit of creating the most performance-capable hot hatch of them all.

Expected to make its grand debut in America within the next 18 months, the Type R’s face, most of its body, and its underlying structure are shared with the new 11th generation Civic sedan.

Judging by its camouflaged, but eye poking, aerodynamic appendages, the upcoming Type R will keep many of the exterior elements of the current model, including the blistered front fenders and huge rear spoiler. Don’t worry though, as it will have its own unique style cues as well, such as the aggressive front-end and triple 458 Italia-like exhausts.

Under the hood, the same 2.0-liter turbocharged VTEC is expected, albeit in a more powerful form, exceeding the current 306hp (310PS) and 295 lb-ft of torque (400Nm) output.

H/T to Greg!
