The water injection system that debuted on the BMW M4 GTS and was developed by Bosch will reach mass production in 2019 and be employed across the industry.

When used by the M4 GTS, the system adds 5 per cent more power by spraying distilled water into the vehicle’s straight-six engine before fuel combustion. This results in lower engine temperatures and decreases knocking.

While the M4 GTS uses the system for power gains, Bosch is actually more focused on improving fuel economy and reducing emissions on cars set to be equipped with the setup. In fact, the company says that its water injection system can lower CO2 emissions by 4 per cent and improve fuel efficiency by 13 per cent.

Discussing the system with Autocar, Bosch global project manager Fabiana Piazza said “The system works best on cars with an output of more than 80kw (107bhp) per litre. We’re launching it into the market now as tighter legislation and new real driving emissions tests are increasing the importance of this technology in all cars.”

Although similar systems are available on the aftermarket, Bosch is the only firm to develop and offer the technology to OEMs.
