Besides the regular versions of the new generation Mercedes GLE, the Germans are also working on a hot AMG variant. According to Autocar, it will use the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that already powers a wide assortment of models within the company’s lineup, though there’s no word on its output.
In the GT R, it’s rated at 585PS (577hp) and 700Nm (516lb-ft) of torque, allowing the sports car to go from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 3.6sec, and up to a top speed of 318km/h (198mph), while in the new E63 S, the same unit makes 612PS (604hp) and 850Nm (627lb-ft) of torque.
The engine will retire the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 used the current model, and it will not only be more powerful, but also more fuel efficient.
Other changes made to the top-of-the-line GLE will include aerodynamic enhancements, a tweaked chassis with firmer suspension and bigger brakes, and some improvements throughout the cabin.
Mercedes-Benz is believed to pull the cover off the new generation GLE in 2018, with the AMG variants following it shortly. A replacement for the GLE Coupe is also in development, as the three-pointed star will continue to offer it as a BMW X6 rival.
