Next up on Porsche’s product menu for 2012 is the introduction of the all-new, second-generation Cayman coupe, which is the closed roof variant of the latest Boxster roadster.

Talking about the roof that is the primary difference between the two models, our latest scoop pictures give us a very clear view of its styling.

If you take a close look at the photos of the current and next generation of the Cayman that we’ve added below, you’ll see that in the new model, the shape of the top looks more integrated into the car’s design and less of an afterthought.

The windshield is more raked while the side windows as well as the rear end of the roof extend more towards the back of the car compared to the current Cayman. These changes along with the beefier and higher placed rear fenders, and the shorter front and rear overhangs, result in a far more sleeker-looking and cohesive shape.

The Cayman S prototype seen here was fitted with fake headlamp and tail light decals covering the same redesigned units found on the latest Boxster. However, one difference over the Boxster that we did notice are the Cayman’s circular lamps (instead of the thin strips) on the corner vents of the front bumper.

The interior was partially covered on the prototype but it’s obvious that it has been carried over unchanged from the new Boxster featuring the higher-placed center console inspired from the Panamera.

Aside from the evolutionary styling, the other highlight of the new Cayman is the lightweight aluminum body, which along with other improvements, is believed to shed as much as 50kg (110 pounds) over the current model.

We don’t expect any drastic changes under the mid-mounted hood as the Cayman will likely launch with the same improved flat six engines found in the Boxster, which include a 265HP 2.7-liter unit for the base model and a 315HP 3.4-liter for the S.

The new Cayman will make its debut by the end of the year and go on sale worldwide by spring of 2013.
