Ford plans to recall certain model year 2011-2013 Fiesta vehicles, built from November 3, 2009 through September 21, 2012, to reprogram the passenger side, curtain air bags.

The recall affects around 262,000 cars sold in North and South America, including 154,604 Fiesta sub-compacts in the United States.

The company said it found that the curtain air bag on the passenger side will not deploy in some crashes when the front passenger seat is empty, thus increasing the risk of injury to the right rear occupant in the event of a side impact collision.

In a filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford said its dealers will reprogram the vehicle’s software so that it no longer suppresses the passenger side curtain air bag when the front passenger seat is unoccupied.

The Blue Oval’s dealers will perform the service free of charge.
