What we believe to be the performance-orientated AMG version of Mercedes-Benz’ upcoming GLA crossover, was spied undergoing speed and handling tests around the world’s most notorious racetrack, Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Albeit heavily wrapped in masking tape and plastic cladding, like the previous GLA 45 AMG prototype we showed you, this one too sports some special features that confirm its performance pedigree like the larger alloy wheels with wide tires hiding chunky brake discs.

As the GLA is built around the same architecture as the A-Class hatchback and CLA sports sedan, the hottest version of the series will be a sister model to the A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG running the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with 355-horsepower and 332 lb-ft (450Nm) of peak torque, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an upgraded all-wheel drive system.

Compared to its regular siblings, the GLA 45 AMG will be pulled closer to the ground via a sports suspension to lower the center of gravity and improve performance. One of the GLA 45 AMG’s main rivals will be the recently announced Audi RS Q3 with a 306hp 2.5-liter turbocharged five-pot.

After the introduction of the GLA Concept at this month’s Shanghai Auto Show, Mercedes will launch the production model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with the AMG variant to likely follow next year.
